If Victor Vasarely left his mark on the kinetic years of the 1960s and 1970s, it is not only because he created a visual language that embodied the very idea of modernity or paved the way for the optical art movement – whose legacy is still very much alive today, as evidenced by the selection of artists in this book. It is primarily because he was driven by a vision of the role of art, aware of the responsibility of the artist as well as that of the architect to promote art in society, and he conceived creation in a holistic way. Vasarely pursued a single objective based on generosity, as he summarized it: "It is nobler to give to everyone than to monopolize everything for oneself and for one’s close ones."
